In addition to attending the seminars and interim events and carrying out a leadership project, each Fellow will have the option of accessing a mentor, drawn from a pool of successful and respected business, government and civil society leaders across Central America. These mentors will be accessible to advise the Fellows on career, projects and work-life balance.
The seminars are held at INCAE's Costa Rica and Nicaragua campuses and in Aspen, Colorado and a rotating site in Central America. There are 4 seminars:
A 5 day seminar in which the Fellows will be exposed to a range of leadership styles - from Howard Schultz at Starbucks to Ricardo Semler at Semco (Brazil), Mahatma Gandhi to Jean Monnet, Martin Luther King Jr. to Nelson Mandela. Case studies will include the pharmaceutical industry and HIV/AIDS in Africa, Nike and international labor practices in Asia. The Fellows will produce a personal handbook of the attributes of effective, enlightened leaders - and of what such leaders do and don't do.
Defining the Good Society: A 5 day seminar in which the Fellows will build their vision of "a good society" by reading, discussing, debating and relating the writings of a wide range of thinkers to their present-day conditions. Thinkers will include Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Rousseau, Hobbes, Lee Kwan Yew, Milton Friedman, Julius Nyerere, Rachel Carson, Ibn Khaldun, Simon Bolivar and others. The Fellows will share their personal thoughts on the proper role of government in society as well as on the sorts of trade-offs they are willing to accept in the name of economic growth.
A 4 day seminar in which the Fellows will explore the economic, political, scientific, cultural and ethical dimensions of globalization. Readings and discussions will cover a wide range of topics including the demands of global capital, the future of the Central America Free Trade Agreement, the challenge of eliminating corruption, the growth of Asian outsourcing and the importance of financial remittances to local economies. The seminar will include a focused leadership exercise on "building a strategy to make CAFTA work for the region, for the US and for the poor."
A 4 day seminar in which the Fellows will share the results and lessons learned from their Leadership Projects and explore issues of balancing work and family, community engagement and personal legacy.
In addition to attending seminars and events including seminars and the obligation to develop a leadership project, each Fellow will have access to a mentor, who may be selected from a group of successful and respected figures in government, civil society and the private sector of Central America`s region who have agreed to collaborate with our initiative. These mentors will be available to advise the Fellows in their careers, projects and the balance between work and life.
