El siguiente discurso fue pronunciado por el Fellow de CALI III Aleckey Murillo con motivo de la ceremonia de graduación CALI III en Antigua, Guatemala en abril de 2010:
Good evening CALI founders, sponsors, fellows, and guests.
As members of the third class of the Central American Leadership Initiative fellowship program, we thank you for being here today to celebrate with us the conclusion of what for each of us has been a defining moment in our journey of life. Each one of us here has experienced far beyond what we could have ever expected from a leadership program. CALI is so much more than that, which may be one reason why each of us struggles to find the right words to answer the deceivingly simple question, “What is CALI?”
When I first entered CALI, I wondered what I had in common with the other fellows in my class – all who have had considerable success in their fields, with impressive resumés and important positions in governmental and international non-governmental organizations or businesses. As a physician living with my wife on the outskirts of the indigenous territory of a small people group in Costa Rica, struggling to start a community development program on our own, I certainly did not consider myself to be in the same category or of the same caliber as the rest of my classmates.
It didn’t take me long, however, to realize why I am a part of CALI. Because in CALI, our titles and our positions are stripped away as we face our common humanity. It is here that our fears, our beliefs, and our desires are laid out on the table as together we search the significance of our lives.
In CALI, we have learned that there is extraordinary strength in a group of leaders who are honest and vulnerable with one another. And that this strength rooted in integrity, which could also be called courage, can be used to overcome barriers to attaining significance.
In CALI, we encourage each other to reject the temptation of being self-satisfied in our accomplishments thus far, and to, instead, take these achievements and invest them in our common passion of bettering the circumstances of our communities, our countries, and our region.
In CALI, we are challenged to look beyond what we can achieve in one lifetime, to leave a legacy that transcends our physical presence on earth, so that our passion for a better society, and our love for people, would long out-live us.
Through CALI, we are the Catalizadores, because we are committed to being catalysts for transforming the social reality of Central America. We pray that we do this not for our own power or glory, but out of humility because it is the right thing to do.
And as many of us are faced with challenges and turmoil in our personal lives and in our countries, we remain optimistic, because we know we are not alone. Together, we will raise our light and shine, and do our best to fulfill the purpose for which we were created.
